Anointing Mass for the sick planned for April 1

S CITY - A joint diocesan anointing Mass for the sick has been scheduled for 10 a.m. April 1.

The fourth annual Mass will be celebrated at Cure of Ars Church, 93rd and Mission Road, Leawood, Kan. Celebrants will be Bishop Raymond J. Boland of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, and Archbishop James P. Keleher of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. Included in the event will be a ritual blessing of the sick similar to what is done at Lourdes, France, event planners said. A reception will follow.

Those eligible to be anointed at the service include:

  • Individuals who are beginning to be weakened by age, even if no specific illness is present, but there is serious impairment.

  • Individuals who are about to undergo surgery due to a serious illness.

  • People who suffer from a chronic or serious illness although they should not receive the sacrament twice for the same illness unless their physical condition has changed.

Event planners ask that those who wish to be anointed at the Mass complete a registration form which will be published in advertisements in March in The Catholic Key.

The Kansas City area Order of Malta is sponsoring the Mass.
