Coaches train to prevent abuse

KANSAS CITY - The Kansas City Parochial League is hosting four sessions of "Protecting God's Children," a diocesan program designed to prevent child abuse, for all Catholic elementary school basketball, volleyball and track coaches.
Vince Fitzgerald, Parochial League director, said the training sessions are mandatory for all head and assistant coaches. The sessions will be directed toward volunteers working with children, he said.
At the training sessions, coaches will receive a certificate verifying their participation. The certificate must be returned to the athletic director of the school where the coach volunteers, who will then forward it to the school's principal.
Coaches who coach multiple sports need attend only one of the training sessions, Fitzgerald said.

- Volleyball: Oct. 23, St. Mary High School, 6:30-9:30 p.m.; Oct. 26, St. Mary High School, 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
- Basketball: Dec. 7, St. Mary High School, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
- Track and Basketball: Dec. 12, St. Mary High School, 6:30-9:30 p.m.
